The Trails at Backbone State Park

East river trail

Castles on the water's edge

Mansions made of time

Housing still another world

Denizens of the night

Clinging on to ledges

Rooted in meager hope

One elm lifts up its hands and breathes

A sacred word of truth.

West river trail

A path leads through the sacred

A singing canopy overhead

Psalms rise around, within

It is good---someone said.

Silently from the underbrush

Bright eyes and flickering tail

Standing with quiet wonder

Life's grace our souls assail .

We walk a sacred pathway

Our feet upon the earth

Never fully knowing

Holiness and worth.

Thank you for the canopy

Thank you sister deer

Thank you in hushed wonder

eternity is here.
